DAY 16: Kingshouse to Inveroran – 9.5 miles *WHW day 3
After a hearty Scottish breakfast of porridge, followed by smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, my sister dropped me back at the Kings House hotel so I could continue along the West Highland Way. I had read last night that bad weather can make both yesterday and today sections “wild, forbidding and exposed”. Obviously yesterday I had my fair share of that, but thankfully today the skies had begun to clear, the wind had dropped significantly and I was finally able to see the majestic mountain range, which I had been walking up, on or under for the last two days.
With such a beautiful backdrop, I had a lovely morning walking through the vast wilderness of heather and bog that make up the Rannoch Moors. With the weather improving each mile, the scenery seemed to mirror this and especially the river views from the last couple of bridges I crossed, were simply breath-taking. I arrived at the Inveroran Hotel to meet my mum and sis, totally buzzing. What a difference a day makes!!!
Typically, just when I could have gone on walking for hours… we had already planned to spend the afternoon driving back north to pick up the things I’d left in Laggan (day 13) and then stop off on the way back in Fort William. Actually it made a nice change to be sat in a car or a while; to see the stunning “middle earth” view of the mountains that I had missed being above the clouds, and the pretty coastline around Fort William. In particular I was chuffed to finally get the chance to see Ben Nevis in all his glory. Once we managed to grab my stuff from Laggan, we hung out in Fort William like tourists for a few hours, before pigging out at the Ben Nevis Inn… where else 🙂
